The OEM procedure is the standard of care
A repair is not judged against what your shop has always done. It is judged against what the vehicle maker published for that specific vehicle. When those two disagree, the published procedure wins, and the shop owns the difference.
The case every instructor now teaches is John Eagle Collision Center. A hail-damaged Honda Fit had its roof bonded on with adhesive instead of welded the way Honda's procedure called for. The car was later struck, the passenger compartment collapsed, the occupants were trapped, and a Texas jury returned a verdict of roughly $42 million. The shop had not looked the procedure up.
Read that as a working rule rather than a horror story: look it up on every job, print it, and put the printout in the file. A procedure you followed but cannot prove you followed is, to an attorney, a procedure you did not follow.
Required, recommended, and position statement
These three words get used interchangeably in the shop and they are not the same thing. The tests know that.
- Required. The procedure states the operation must be performed. There is no technician discretion. Skipping it is a departure from the procedure, full stop.
- Recommended. The maker advises it but has not made it a condition. You still document your decision, because "recommended" is not the same as "optional with no consequences" once a claim is filed.
- Position statement. Not a repair procedure at all. It is the manufacturer's published stance on a practice: whether they accept sectioning at a given location, whether they require a pre-repair and post-repair scan, whether they accept aftermarket or salvaged parts on a particular assembly.
A position statement tells you where the maker stands. The repair procedure tells you what to do with your hands. You need both, and one never substitutes for the other.
Finding the right procedure, in order
Most wrong procedures are pulled correctly from the wrong vehicle. Work in this order every time:
- Start at the VIN, not the year on the fender. Trim, body style, drivetrain and even the plant can change the panel, the substrate and the fastening method on the same model year.
- Confirm the substrate before you confirm the operation. A quarter panel is not a procedure. Mild steel, high strength steel, ultra high strength steel, aluminum and composite each carry their own rules on heat, on straightening and on whether the part may be repaired at all.
- Read the whole section, not the step you came for. Torque values, one time use fasteners, corrosion protection and required calibrations usually live in notes above and below the step itself.
- Check the revision date. Procedures are updated. A printout from a previous job on the same model is not evidence of anything if the maker revised it since.
- Print it and attach it to the file. The printout carries the date, the vehicle and the revision. That is your proof.
What an SOP is, and why it is not the procedure
A standard operating procedure is your shop's own written method for a repeated task: how you receive a vehicle, how you document damage, how you set up for a weld, how you handle a battery on a hybrid. The OEM procedure covers the car. The SOP covers your people.
A good SOP does three things. It states the order of operations so two technicians produce the same result. It names the checkpoint at which someone verifies the work before the next stage. It says where the evidence goes, which is what turns a good repair into a defensible one.
An SOP never overrides an OEM procedure. If your shop SOP and the maker's procedure disagree, the SOP is the thing that changes.
Manufacturer training is free more often than techs expect
Several makers run their own collision training academies and publish a good deal of it at no cost, or at no cost after a free sign-up. It is worth an hour of your own time for two reasons beyond the certificate.
First, manufacturer training is where you learn how that brand thinks: which joints they will let you section, how they expect you to protect electronics, what they consider a structural part. That pattern carries across their whole range and makes every future procedure faster to read.
Second, an employer reading two similar resumes will take the technician who already holds the brand's training. It costs you nothing but the evening.
When there is no procedure
It happens, particularly on older vehicles and on assemblies the maker never expected to be repaired. Silence is not permission.
Work through it in this order. Check whether the maker has a position statement covering the practice generally, even if not this panel. Check whether an industry body such as I-CAR publishes a recognised method for the joint and the substrate. If neither exists, the honest answer is often that the part is replaced rather than repaired, and the estimate should say so.
Write down what you searched, where you searched and what you found. A documented search that came up empty is a defensible position. An undocumented assumption is not.
