How to Build Your Collision Repair Kit

Twenty years in body shops and paint stores taught me one thing about tools: the order you buy them in matters as much as the brands you pick. New students blow their first paycheck on a flashy spray gun and then borrow a respirator for a year. That is backwards. Below is the way I teach my students at Sheridan Technical to build a kit, from the gear that protects your lungs and eyes to the precision tools that earn your paycheck. Everything on this page is chosen the same way, tools our program actually uses and that hold up to daily shop abuse.

Respiratory Protection Comes First

The most important tool in refinishing is the one on your face. Isocyanates in modern clearcoats and primers can permanently sensitize your lungs, and no amount of "I feel fine" changes what they do over time. For sanding, mixing, and spraying solvent products, the shop standard is a NIOSH-approved half-facepiece respirator with organic-vapor (OV) cartridges plus P95 or P100 particulate pre-filters, not a paper dust mask. A dust mask stops nothing that matters here.

When you spray two-component (2K) urethane clears and primers, step up to a supplied-air respirator in a proper booth. Whatever you wear, it only protects you if it seals, so get fit-tested and keep a clean shave along the seal line. Replace cartridges on a schedule, not when you start to smell solvent. By then you are already breathing it.

Eyes, Ears, Skin, and Hands

Safety glasses rated ANSI Z87+ are the baseline any time a grinder, DA sander, or air tool is running. When you are cutting, grinding, or spraying, add a face shield over the glasses. Hearing protection matters more than people admit, a body shop runs at levels that cause slow, permanent loss, so keep muffs or plugs on your box.

For hands, match the glove to the job: nitrile for solvents, paint, and body filler; cut-resistant gloves for handling raw sheet metal and glass; and heavier work gloves for teardown. Barrier cream and clean gloves are not fussiness, they keep hardeners and reducers off your skin, which is another route those chemicals use to get into you.

Choosing Your First Spray Gun

You do not need three guns to start. You need one good HVLP or high-efficiency gravity-feed gun you can clean properly and dial in. A quality gun atomizes better, wastes less material, and teaches you good habits, where a cheap gun fights you and hides your mistakes. SATA, Iwata, and DeVilbiss are the names our program leans on for good reason.

Setup matters more than badge: a roughly 1.3 to 1.4 mm tip covers most basecoat and clear work, while primer wants a larger 1.7 to 2.0 mm tip. Learn to read the technical data sheet (TDS) for the product you are spraying, it tells you the tip size, air pressure, and number of coats the manufacturer actually tested. Guessing is how you get orange peel, runs, and solvent pop.

Air Supply: The Part Beginners Skip

A great gun starved for air still sprays badly. Before you upgrade the gun, make sure your compressor delivers the CFM your gun needs at 90 PSI, with headroom. A gun that calls for 13 CFM on a compressor that only makes 10 will short-cycle, drop pressure mid-pass, and ruin your atomization. Size up, or add tank capacity.

Just as important is clean, dry air. Moisture and oil in the line cause fisheyes and blush that look like paint defects but start at the compressor. A desiccant dryer and a good filter/regulator at the gun are cheap insurance against redoing a whole panel.

Sanding and Surface Prep

Refinishing lives and dies on prep. A pneumatic 6-inch dual-action (DA) sander with hook-and-loop pads is the workhorse, paired with a stocked range of grits: coarser paper to cut and shape filler, stepping up through the finer grits that leave a surface fine enough for primer and paint to bond. Skipping grits leaves sand scratches that telegraph straight through your topcoat.

Round out the kit with sanding blocks for flat and contoured panels, a guide coat to reveal low spots, and quality wax-and-grease remover with clean towels. The unglamorous consumables are what separate a finish that looks right in the booth from one that still looks right in the sun.

Body and Structural Hand Tools

For non-structural work (ASE B3), a starter set of body hammers and dollies, a stud welder or dent-pulling setup, and body files covers most metal finishing. Add plastic-repair supplies and a plastic welder as you move into bumper and cladding work, since those materials are everywhere on modern vehicles.

Structural repair (ASE B4) leans on measuring and pulling equipment you will usually meet in a shop rather than buy first, but the personal tools that carry over are a solid MIG welder you know how to set up and the PPE for hot work: a proper welding helmet, flame-resistant gloves, and a jacket. Always confirm the OEM procedure before you cut or weld a structural panel.

Estimating and Diagnostic Tools

Damage analysis and estimating (ASE B6) is a different kind of toolbox. Here the "tools" are a reliable digital camera or phone for documentation, a paint thickness gauge, a tape and a tram gauge, and access to OEM repair procedures and estimating software. Reading a repair the right way the first time is what protects the shop, the insurer, and the customer.

More vehicles now require pre- and post-repair scans and ADAS calibration, so a scan tool (or a solid relationship with a shop that has one) is quickly becoming standard. Knowing when a windshield replacement or sensor R and R triggers a calibration is exactly the kind of judgment the B6 exam tests.

What to Buy First on a Student Budget

If money is tight, buy in this order and you will never waste a dollar: (1) Respirator and safety glasses. Non-negotiable, and cheap next to your health. (2) Nitrile gloves, hearing protection, and a good tape measure. (3) One quality DA sander and a range of grit paper, because prep is where beginners lose the most points. (4) One good spray gun once you have air that can feed it. (5) Hand tools and specialty gear as your coursework reaches them.

Borrow the big equipment, own your PPE. A shared frame machine is normal; a shared respirator is not. Build the kit the way you build the skill, safety and fundamentals first, then the tools that show off what you have learned.
